Course Overview

This webinar provides an overview of patent prosecution flow, reviewing key steps in the filing and examination of patent applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Here, the instructor surveys the differences between utility and design patents and reviews the anatomy of a patent and its file history. Key prosecution documents are also discussed including the parts of a patent application, office actions, office responses, Information Disclosure Statements (IDSs), notices of allowance, and more. Instruction will focus on aspects paralegals should pay attention to when assisting in prosecution and review prosection tools that are helpful for practitioners.

About Instructor, Jessica L.A. Marks

Jessica L.A. Marks is Senior Patent Counsel at Unified Patents, LLC. Her practice focuses on post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in technology areas including the internet-of-things, cloud computing, open-source, and content distribution. Prior to joining Unified, Ms. Marks worked at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where her practice included prosecution, litigation, ITC proceedings, and post-grant proceedings at the PTAB. Ms. Marks has served as an adjunct professor at George Washing Law School. Ms Marks graduated from the University of Maryland (now Francis King Carrey) School of Law, and holds a Master in Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and B.A. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.
