Level Up Series: Legal Writing Basics
This two-hour Legal Writing Basics seminar with Deborah E. Bouchoux, Esq., begins with a brief review of some of the “mechanics” of legal writing, namely, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Flaws in this technical area distract readers from your message, making them doubt your abilities, and reflect on your carelessness.
The seminar proceeds to address the critical components of effective legal writing: precision, clarity, accuracy, brevity, and order and provides tips and strategies to enliven your writing and ensure your communications are read and understood. Strategies to improve your proofreading skills will also be addressed.
The way you communicate, communicates information about you. Make sure you’re right not only with regard to the big issues, such as legal analysis and your conclusions, but also with regard to the smaller issues, including punctuation, word choice, and editing and proofreading.
