Start with Yourself by Emma Grede gave me many different perspectives on situations I had never thought about too closely. Each chapter highlighted different aspects of her life and gave readers a practical, honest perspective on personal growth, self-awareness, and accountability. Grede emphasizes the importance of understanding yourself and how that understanding will help you achieve success.

One part that especially resonated with me was the family chapter, which opens with Diane von Furstenberg’s quote: “The most important relationship you’ll ever have is the relationship you’ll have with yourself.” Grede discusses how women, especially mothers, are often expected to put everyone else first, while men are not judged the same way for taking time for themselves. I appreciated this point because she frames self-prioritization not as selfish, but as necessary.

For me, this message felt especially relevant. As a young professional learning to balance work, school, relationships, and still make time for myself, I found that this book reminded me that taking care of myself is a huge part of growth, not a distraction at all. Recently, I have felt guilty taking breaks or time for myself, but after reflecting, I realize that the best way for me to move forward is to prioritize myself and learn when to step away from work and do something relaxing.

Overall, Start With Yourself is a thoughtful and relevant read. It helps to encourage readers to reflect on who they are and what they need for personal growth. Grede’s message is practical and empowering, and it reminded me that prioritizing yourself is not selfish; it is part of learning how to grow.
