Ashley asked us both to describe our perspectives and understandings about LinkedIn. After reading Jodie Cook’s article and evaluating our experiences with LinkedIn, we realized it is far more than a platform to showcase value, share insights, and establish credibility: it’s an opportunity to own your niche (as Jodie Cook highlights in her Forbes piece from May 27, 2025). Cook reminds us that, with only about 1% of users posting regularly, there is a significant gap between creators and viewers on LinkedIn, presenting a hidden plethora of opportunities for users to share their knowledge.
While there are individual differences, Gen Xers, with a lifetime of work behind them, tend to view LinkedIn as a crucial tool for career development and professional networking, particularly as it makes it easier to connect and stay in contact with co-workers, both past and present, and peers they’ve met during their career. They also realize its value in skills enhancement, something the graying workforce needs to stay competitive.
In contrast, Gen Z users, while appreciating its utility in furthering expertise, like to use LinkedIn to showcase achievements and career milestones. They value the ease of displaying “individuality, digital fluency, and instant connectivity.”
Finally, millennials value “authenticity, social consciousness, and experiences,” according to a LinkedIn article. These are traits that significantly influence their choices as consumers, employees, and even leaders. They’re drawn to brands and organizations that align with their personal values, prioritize ethical practices, and foster true human connection, making these values central to how they engage with the world around them.
It is by joining these values together that we can recognize how LinkedIn isn’t just for job searching—it is positioning us as niche experts!
According to Cook’s article, we illustrate how our combined generational strengths can harness LinkedIn’s power by following some key strategies, listed below:
Define 2–3 niche themes to focus on—expertise isn’t about knowing everything, it’s about mastering something (linkedin.com).
Publish consistently, aiming for 2–5 posts per week that add genuine value—advice, case studies, metrics (businessinsider.com).
Engage with intention—meaningful comments and prompt responses build visibility and trust.
Show your process—not just the results, but also the failures, pivots, and frameworks that shaped your growth.
Knowledge is power; we learned by bridging the generation gap, and we can show that we value the opportunity to collaborate and draw from both the article and our LinkedIn journeys. We enjoy co-creating this narrative on a platform designed for intergenerational impact—where experienced professionals and rising voices connect, learn, and share. Use it wisely and leave a meaningful impact with kindness.
