This past month, Ashley offered me the opportunity to attend Rewriting Our Narratives at Tempo by Hilton Times Square in New York City. This was such a meaningful and inspiring experience, especially since the event took place during AAPIH Month and centered on identity, storytelling, and professional growth.

Being in a room filled with attorneys, professionals, students, nonprofit leaders, and sponsors was so inspiring. Even though I am still early in my own academic and professional journey, I could feel how much intention went into creating a space where people were there not only to listen, but also to connect, learn, and support one another.

The central theme of the event was that our identities and narratives change and evolve. This event created a space where people could reflect on how they define themselves, how others perceive them, and how they can change those perspectives and take ownership of their stories. Since the discussion was held under the Chatham House Rule, which fosters a comfortable environment, attendees were more open and vulnerable.

As a rising senior in college who plans to attend law school and pursue a career in law, I found this event extremely impactful. It showed me that professional success stems from confidence, representation, and mentorship, not just credentials and experience.

As I head towards law school, it can be easy to get caught up in the stress and pressure and just focus on the degree, but this event reminded me that who I am will help me find my place. This opportunity to hear from multiple professionals across different backgrounds reminded me that there is no single path into law, leadership, or advocacy.

This event was also incredibly meaningful to me because it was one of my first assignments as an intern with Virtual Patent Gateway. Being able to travel to New York City and be part of an event like this so early in my internship helped me better understand the broader mission behind the work. There is so much behind-the-scenes effort, preparation, communication, and teamwork that goes into creating an event where people feel welcomed and valued. It was great to be a part of Ashley’s team and help bring it all together.

Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to attend this event and be part of such a meaningful experience so early in my internship with VPG. It gave me a better understanding of the importance of storytelling, community, and representation, and reminded me how much there is to learn from the people and experiences around me.
