Why Great Content Isn’t Enough

Melissa Cohen, along with her lab partner, Ashley Cheung, recently led a Virtual Patent Gateway On-Demand course, LinkedIn Lab: From Profile to Recognized Authority, a hands-on session focused on one of the biggest mistakes professionals make on LinkedIn: creating content that says one thing while their profile says another.

Many people post valuable insights, share expertise, and engage consistently, yet their profile fails to reinforce that message. When that happens, both LinkedIn’s algorithm and potential connections receive mixed signals. And confusion online often leads to invisibility.

Every part of your profile acts as a trust signal. Your headline, About section, experience, and profile photos should work together to clearly communicate who you are, what you do, and why you matter. If someone reads a strong post and clicks on your profile, that momentum can disappear quickly if your page feels outdated, generic, or disconnected from your content. Authority isn’t built through posts alone; it’s built when your profile validates the expertise your content promises.

That was one key takeaway from Melissa’s lab. Every post teaches LinkedIn how to show your content to, while every profile section helps people decide whether to follow, connect, or hire you. When your messaging is aligned, reach improves, trust increases, and opportunities become more likely. Visibility is no longer just about showing up; it’s about showing up clearly.

The lesson is simple: sporadic posting creates noise, but strategic alignment creates authority. If you want stronger results on LinkedIn, don’t just focus on what you publish. Make sure your profile supports the story your content is already telling.
